The college was started in 1972 as a second grade college with just two Pre-degree batches – [Group III [Humanities] and 1V [Commerce] and started functioning in a building of the Director of Public Instruction at Down Hill, Malappuram which continued till it was shifted to the present site in 1981. The realization of the college due to Janab C. H. Mohammed Koya, the then minister for Education, Government of Kerala, whose dedication, involvement and enthusiasm primarily contributed for it.
In the very next year the college was upgraded with the introduction of U. G courses in Arabic, Commerce and Economics. Another milestone in the history of the college was the starting of degree course in Islamic History with Economics and Political Science as the subsidiaries. This was farsighted step in the righint direction, providing opportunity for the and research in Islamic History in this predominantly Muslim area. In the year, sanction was accorded to start Group II [Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional] at the Pre degree level.

The college obtained U G course in Malayalam in the year 1981. After two years, in 1983, Group I (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as optional) was started. Later, to cater to the needs of large number of students passing out of the High School in the area additional batches were introduced for Groups III and IV at the Pre degree stage and shift system introduced when infrastructural facilities were inadequate. During the academic year 1997-98 when the Govt decided to de-link the Pre degree courses from colleges as part of the U G C Scheme, they were withdrawn. The college has produced consistently good result in the university examinations every year.
