Established in 1972, the Department of Economics is the oldest and one of the best departments in the college. It had a humble begining with a third group in the Pre degree programme, which was subsequently elevated to an under graduate department offering BA programme in Economics in 1973.The department was upgraded to the present position in 1999 with an MA Programme in Economics. We are proud to have a strong alumnae with our former students placed in high profile jobs across the world. Our students regularly get admissions for higher studies in reputed institutions. Currently the department have Seven faculties and 250 students and the department aspires to become a research department in the near future.

MISSION
To provide a better understanding of the theoretical knowledge through hands on experience. To equip the students with the necessary skills that is essential to analyse the economic problems of the region. To encourage the students to apply the logic of economics in explaining various socio-economic phenomena.
BA Programme in Economics was started in the year 1973 with History and Political Science as subsidiary/ Complementary papers. Now it is a three-year programme comprising six semesters of six months. The total number of seats in BA economics in the academic year 2022-23 was 60 plus 6 additional seats to accommodate students belonging to Sports, Differently abled, and Lakshadweep categories. The audit courses offered by the department are Environment Studies in the first semester, Disaster Management in the second semester, Consumer Protection in the third semester, and Gender Studies in the fourth semester.
MA Programme in Economics was started in the year 1999. Now it is a two-year programme comprising four semesters of six months. The total number of seats in MA economics in the academic year 2022-23 was Twenty plus a Twenty percent marginal increase (Four seats) and three additional seats to accommodate students belonging to Sports, Differently abled, and Lakshadweep categories. The elective offered in the programme are “Banking: Theory and Practice” in the Third Semester, Business Economics and Research Methodology and Computer Application in the last semester. The students must undergo two audit courses each inthe first two semesters of the Programme.
